Works perfectly! I’m sure I’ll start seeing savings right away since I have plethora of equipment. Setup is simple, just plug the TV i it into the controlling outlet and then the DVD player, xbox, etc… into the switching outlets. Now when I power off/on the TV everything shuts off/on with it. The nice thing about the power strip is that it has a couple of always-on outlets for recording devices – so they don’t lose the date and time. This is a well thought out and simple product.

If you want something to help you save a few buck on your energy bill while also prolonging the life of Equipment, this is the tool for you.

I had an idea what this SmartStrip could do but i really wanted to see it for myself. This guy is as simple as it sounds and just as convient.

You have 1 outlet that you plug your switching device in. The switching device is the device that when you turn on or off turns everything else on or off. You also have 2 Always ON outlets (for DVR boxes or Broadband Modem, etc). And 4 “Controlled” outlets, 1 of which is an extra wide one. Now, the 1 outlet for the switching device is an Always ON outlet.

There is a little knob on the side for helping you tweek the switching setting that power off everything else when you put the main device into a low power state or off. Because some things draw power even when turned off so you may need to tweek it.

I bought this to try it out at work. If you want something to definitely help at home or at the office, this is perfect. At work, i had my Laptop at the switching port. I plugged the Monitor, the Speakers, the Desk Lamp, my cell chargers, any and all accessories into the controlled ports. I tweeked the knob on the side so that when I put my laptop into Standby, that it will also shut off everything else as well. To tweek it, you must put the computer into Standby mode and adjusted the knob until all the devices turn off.

This is great because the moment i shutdown the computer at night, it turns everything off and i don’t have to forget about turning anything off. All that littles of electricity its saving is great.

You could easily use it at home. You can have it setup where your TV is the switch, your DVR is in the Always ON, your DVD, VCR, Game Consoles, Stereo, Home Theater, etc are all plugged into the Controlled Ports, So that the moment you turn the TV off, everything else turns off. No more nagging the kids to make sure they turned everything else, no need to round through remotes to make sure everything else is off.

The price is right as well, you are going to pay about the same price for something that also does about the same amount of Surge Protection, so why not get something that will save you in long running cost as well. It could pay for itself in the first year alone.

After hearing about the “vampire” effect of leaving things plugged in, I ordered two of these thinking I could use one for the living room and one for the home office. I couldn’t get either of them to work with my computer even after calling tech support and adjusting the sensitivity settings.

Oh, I also purchased a Kill-A-Watt meter after the fact to measure this vampire effect and I was shocked at how LITTLE energy all these appliances use in the off position. Most of my appliances and electronic devices didn’t even register a tenth of a watt while in the off/standby position. I measured my whole home theater system with my former power strip. All of the electronic devices combined barely registered a watt.

So, I could go on about what works and what doesn’t with this product, but the bottom line is that it really isn’t worth the extra money. Remember, having this thing shut your electronics down by powering off another device is like pulling the plug of each device out of the wall. There are many modern electronics that are not designed to be turned off in that manner.

This thing is fine now that I have worked around all the kinks, but I don’t believe I am saving any money and I would not recommend this to anyone. A good surge protector is all anyone needs.

Hey, saving every bit of energy helps, right? The Smart Strip is one tool to help your household become more energy efficient! I purchased mine for my computer after reading about it in Money Magazine. Set up is easy, basically just plug your computer into the control plug and then plug any peripherals into the auto-switching plugs. Doing this allows you to use your computer to control power on/off of all devices. Very nice, simple and convenient. Cost is about $30 and, from what I’ve read in various media, it should pay for itself in a year. Not a bad investment to help save the environment.

I should mention that we thought the strip wasn’t working when we first set it up. Do note that there is a sensitivity adjustment dial on the strip. You have to fiddle with that to ensure that all of the devices power on/off with your main device. Thing to do is just turn off the main device and then turn the dial until all other devices shut off.

Now, I will say that my boyfriend refuses to use one of these on his home theater system. It has to do with the memory functions on his receiver and the fact that he uses his Playstation 3 to add processing power to the cancer research effort (Folding @ Home). So, that may be something to think about. If you’re going to lose all of your presets when you turn off your TV, using this device may not be worth the frustration.

We love this product and it works well.

My issue is with the description on the box of how much money using this device can save. By their figures, the device, when used with an “average” computer system, saves 113 KWH per month; at 15 cents/kwh (about what we pay in the Philadelphia area) that would be about $203/year.

We have a typical 3-year-old Dell Dimension desktop computer, LCD monitor, printer, sound system, and DSL modem that together consume about 14 watt hrs. in standby (I checked with a Kill-A-Watt meter). Using the LCG3 reduces the standby power draw to 1 watt hr. So, assuming 12 hrs. standby/day x 13 watts saved/hr. x 365 days x 15 cents/kwh gives an annual savings estimate of about $8.50/year (for 57 kwh/year saved), a much more realistic $ savings estimate for today’s computers.

However, we bought this smart strip to help reduce electricity demand and greenhouse gases from power plants, so perhaps the most important benefits aren’t strictly financial. And electricity prices have nowhere to go but up.

I changed my review from a 1 to a 5…here’s why I am impressed. First, I had a Tanita scale; it told me my weight, body fat, water weight, bone weight, if my toe nails needed to be cut, etc. However, I could not read the display and as executive/non-athlete I did not need all this information. When that scale died, I went looking for a good solid simple scale. I liked the way this scale looked and the reviews on Amazon were good. Plus, the price was great. I got it right away, and it was great. Looked good, easy to read, and I liked the 0.2 denominations. However, unfortunately it stopped working after two weeks. I went to return it on Amazon and posted a disappointing review. Then the most amazing thing happened…this really happened…about an hour after I posted my review, I was contacted by the company. They read my review and apologized that my unit was not operating the way that it was supposed, discussed their high quality control and that this should not have happened, and then they sent me a replacement right away. THAT IS CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! They are family run operation that prides themselves on customer service and providing people with a quality product. THEY STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS! There are so few of these good companies left. I was very impressed. I am a very happy customer again and will buy other products from this company!! I hope you will too.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R15FLE7YQUJVGE Update (3/22/10) – The company was nice enough to send me an updated version of this scale with their step on feature. Ill hopefully be updating my video shortly, but long story short there is no more tapping to activate and calibrate the scale. You just step on and get your readings. Otherwise its basically the same accurate, consistent scale it has been for the last year and a half.

Original Review – I think my title says it all. I own other EatSmart products so I bought this scale with confidence. Its a no-frills bathroom scale with one user that is accurate and easy to use.

Operating is easy. You tap the glass to wake the scale up and step on….no wasted time setting up users (which my last scale had) or programming weight loss goals. The scale reads out to the nearest .2 pounds, which is a nice feature when you are trying to gain confidence and hit short term weight loss goals (every little bit counts to me). More importantly its CONSISTANT, which means I get the same reading every time I step on and off the scale. Nothing was more infuriating than weighing myself, stepping off, re-weighing myself and seeing a completely different number (by as much as 5 lbs!). EatSmart seems to have solved this problem quite nicely.

Style-wise I have no complaints….the glass top is much better looking than the stainless steel I have previously and it doesn’t make nearly as much noise when stepped on. The thinner profile also keeps me low to the ground so I worry less about slippage after a shower (plus with the larger LCD I’m not hunched over to read it).

A must have investment for anyone looking to lose weight.

I am SO happy to finally have a bathroom scale that WORKS! My old Taylor scale was just crap. Seriously. I lost so much motivation because of that thing, it would give me different weights anywhere within a 5-pound “range” every time I stepped on it, so I never had any idea what I actually weighed, or whether or not my hard work was paying off. Drove me nuts!

Because of that, I put my new EatSmart scale through a lot of “tests” when I got it today. I stepped on it 5 times in a row, alternating between it and the old Taylor scale each time. The old scale gave me 5 completely different numbers, as usual, but the EatSmart stayed the same each time! I even tried putting the laundry basket on it in between weighs, to make sure it wasn’t just “remembering” the last number. Nope! So then I tried drinking a big glass of water, and sure enough, the EatSmart registered a .6 pound increase. Fantastic! I’m so pleased with the consistency and accuracy of this scale. I’m feeling 100x more energized and motivated than I was yesterday, because I know now I’ll be able to see the REAL results of my actions, good or otherwise. :)

The scale is very accurate. I stepped on and off multiple times, and always got the same number. Then I put on a light jacket, stepped on again, and it was up .6 pounds. Perfect! However, it is somewhat tricky turning the scale on. They say you’re supposed to “tap” it with your foot to activate it, but nothing happens when I tap. The only thing that seems to work for me is if I slide my foot underneath the scale and lift it up slightly. This seems to turn it on, but it’s a somewhat awkward maneuver. So I take off two stars for the difficulty in turning it on.

UPDATE (3/25/2010) since writing my previous review, EatSmart has updated their product and gotten rid of the need to tap on. They sent me a new version, and it really does work much better. It seems just as accurate, though there is a .2 pound difference between the old scale and the new (which really isn’t too bad). You step on the scale, and it just works. Much better!!

When I finally decided to replace the old analog scale that I have had for the last decade I thought it was going to be an expensive and borderline painful process. After doing a little research, I purchased the EatSmart scale primarily because the large display was appealing (I have a very small apartment bathroom with one small overhead light) and the price seemed right.

I have been nothing but thrilled with this purchase so far. The large screen allows for me to easily read the scale every time (even after I get out of the shower and the bathroom is fogged up). With my old analog I was always hunching over to figure out what major weights the dial was between. It also is very accurate (I weighed myself multiple times the first few times to test this) and has none of the huge weight fluctuations reported in the reviews of some of Amazon’s other scales. Best of all the price was very reasonable versus scales with similar features I have seen elsewhere.

    Highly recommended.
